COULDYOU? MUSIC WORKSHOP (2018-2019)

Context of the intervention

For millions of girls in low and middle income countries, dealing with menstrual hygiene creates extreme difficulties, particularly when still at school. Lack of money to buy hygiene products means they must rely on old cloth, bedding or paper and, in some settings, the use of organic matter like leaves, grass, animal hides, or nothing at all. These unhygienic and uncomfortable materials leak, cause embarrassment, and reduce their ability to concentrate on schoolwork, or result in them missing school during their period.

The Could You Cup initiative is based on the work of the world's leading researcher on menstrual health, Penelope Phillips-Howard, from the Liverpool School of Tropical medicine, who has been working in rural Uganda on this topic for over a decade. It talks about the results and how to take the learnings and apply them to an acceptability/messaging campaign in Mozambique. The research shows that the menstrual cup is the safest, cheapest and greenest menstrual solution. The findings show that the cup lasts a minimum of 10 years and does not require water (girls can remove it while in a latrine, dump it and put it back in, with no health risk).

It is generally accepted that girls get their first menstruations when they reach 13 or 14 years old. Most of the girls try to hide their first menstruations, and very few go to the health centre. They often use home-made solutions like sheets, before getting enough money and confidence to buy pads. A box of pads costs a minimum 125 MZN per month. Sometimes the girl will ask her partner to pay for it, or even negotiate a box for sex.
